Heavy Crude Oil

Heavy crude oil is a type of crude oil that has a high density and viscosity, making it difficult to flow through pipelines or be easily refined into usable products. It contains a high amount of sulfur, metals, and other impurities, which makes it more challenging to process, and requires specialized refining techniques.

Despite its challenges, heavy crude oil is an important source of energy for the oil and gas industry. It is typically used to produce heavy fuel oil, asphalt, and other products, and can also be upgraded into lighter crude oil through processes such as thermal cracking, coking, and hydroprocessing.

Heavy crude oil reserves are found in several regions worldwide, including Canada, Venezuela, and the Middle East. In recent years, the development of new technology such as steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and advanced refining techniques has made it more feasible to extract and process heavy crude oil, leading to an increase in its production and use. However, concerns around the environmental impact of heavy crude oil extraction and refining remain a topic of discussion in the industry.
