Factory orders declined after recent increases, but unfilled orders improved by 0.05 % to $1,409 billions.The Commerce Department reported orders for U.S.-made items deteriorated in April by -3.69 % to $595 billions, a decrease by $22.8 billions from $617 in March on the seasonally adjusted basis.
Without a strong manufacturing sector, it is hard to see how economic growth can be realized. Bookings advanced by 1.73 % for the year, and unfilled orders by 0.80 %.

In April total manufacturing shipments fell by -0.30 % to $599 billions, a decrease by $2 billions from $601 in March on the seasonally adjusted basis. Excluding transportation shipments fell by -0.63 %.

In March factory orders were revised to 3.95 % growth to $617 billions and manufacturing shipments to $601 billions an increase by 0.65 %.

Excluding defense and transportation, which the government uses to help calculate quarterly reports on U.S. growth, orders faded more than ovrall orders by -4.22 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, but unfilled orders grew by 0.02 %. Excluding defense and transportation advanced by 1.48 % and shipments by 2.72 % for the year.
In April total factory inventories declined by -0.05 % to $944 billions, a decrease by $1 billions from $944 in March on the seasonally adjusted basis, as shipments for construction machinery declined -3.05 % to $4 billions, accounting for 0.65 % of total shipments. Inventory to shipments ratio grew to 1.58 from 1.57 in the previous month.

Unfilled orders have increased by smaller rate than a month ago, unfilled booking advanced by 0.05 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, led by 3.77 % growth in mining and oil field machinery, representing 0.3 % of total unfilled bookings. total factory inventories rose by 0.80 % over the past 12 months.
