PPI U.S. Economy



Producer prices remain unchanged in July after a gain in the last month, but are up over the past 12 months, led by increase in crude petroleum prices.
The Wholesale price Index remained unchanged in July on the seasonally adjusted basis, reported by the U.S. Labor Department. The producer price index measures whether the cost of goods rise or fall at the wholesale level before they reach consumers. Over the last 12 months, ppi soared by 3.3 %, as the core rate increased on the slower rate than total ppi.

Investors are monitoring how corporations are passing along rising commodity prices onto consumers, which may signal the rise of inflation.
PPI (Picture Autor: Hinrich licence Creative Commons) Crude materials prices have rebounded from decline in previous period, the cost of raw materials grew by 2.7 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, led by price increases for manufacturing materials and crude fuel. Core rate, viewed as a leading indicator of inflation decreased by -1.2 % on the seasonally adjusted basis. Compare to a year ago crude materials prices jumped by 8.2 %.

Core rate of producer price inflation remained unchanged equally to total producer price index on the seasonally adjusted basis. excluding volatile food and energy categories, the core rate of producer price inflation rose by 2.6 % in the past 12 months.

Nondurable Goods

Prices for intermediate goods remained unchanged on the seasonally adjusted basis. Core intermediate rate grew by 0.3 % on the seasonally adjusted basis. The core component of PPI is viewed as a key leading indicator of inflation. Over the past 12 months, intermediate prices grew by 6.8 %.

Intermediate products are items such as steel, processed from iron ore, before it is made into cars.

Prices for finished consumer goods have increased on the same pace like in previous month, finished goods advanced by 0.1 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, durable goods and nondurable goods prices grew above averge, although food prices declined. Over the past 12 months, prices for finished goods grew by 4.5 %.
