Wholesale prices up but core declined

PPI U.S. Economy




The Wholesale price Index increased by 0.4 % in May on the seasonally adjusted basis, reported by the U.S. Labor Department. Crude materials for further processing, food and crude petroleum prices grew above averge in the last month. Over the past 12 months, while excluding food and energy, core rate increased compare to total ppi, producer prices of finished goods decreased by -0.8 %.

Other Goods
Wholesale price index excluding food and energy declined despite the increase in total PPI, by -0.1 % on the seasonally adjusted basis.
Core PPI excludes the volatile food and energy categories in order to provide better idea about longer-term inflationary trends.
The cost of living rose by 0.7 % over the past 12 months.

Prices for intermediate goods have rebounded from decline in previous period, intermediate prices advanced by 0.1 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, where prices for food manufacturing materials grew the most, by 8.4 %. Excluding volatile food and energy, core intermediate rate, dropped by -0.6 % on the seasonally adjusted basis. Prices for intermediate goods dropped by -6.8 % from May 2019.

Intermediate products are items such as steel, processed from iron ore, before it is made into cars.

Nondurable Goods

Prices for finished consumer goods have rebounded from decline in previous period, finished consumer goods prices rose by 1.6 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, cost for food grew the most, led by higher prices for fruits, by 11.4 %, beef & veal by 69.1 %. Prices for finished consumer goods faded by -3.3 % for the year.
Crude materials prices have rebounded from decline in previous period, the cost of raw materials soared by 8.9 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, led by price increases for manufacturing materials and crude fuel. Excluding food and energy, core crude rate, which the Federal Reserve pays close attention for signs of inflation increased by 0.6 % on the seasonally adjusted basis. Prices for crude materials dropped by -19.4 % from May 2019.
