Producer prices on the rise again in April 2023

U.S. Wholesale prices rebounded in April 2023 after the decline in March 2023, led by increase in crude petroleum prices.
The Labor Department announced total PPI edge up by 0.2 % in April 2023 on the seasonally adjusted basis. Overall PPI grew by 2.3 % over the past 12 months, as the core rate increased on the higher rate than total producer prices.

Other Goods
Investors are monitoring how corporations are passing along rising commodity prices onto consumers, which may signal the rise of inflation.
PPI (Picture Autor: Hinrich licence Creative Commons) Crude materials prices continue to grow by higher rate, the cost of raw materials rose by 1.7 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, cost for manufacturing materials grew the most. Core rate rose by 1.8 % on the seasonally adjusted basis. The core component is one of key leading indicators of inflation. Prices for crude materials dropped by -19.2 % from April 2022.

Core PPI excluding food and energy increased equally to total producer price index by 0.2 % on the seasonally adjusted basis.
Some economists prefer core ppi over the total PPI, because they believe it provides a better idea of longer-term inflationary trends.
Over the last 12 months, PPI excluding food and energy soared by 3.5 %.

Nondurable Goods

Prices for intermediate goods have declined by smaller rate than a month ago, intermediate prices fell by -0.4 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, as prices for processed fuels fell the most. Core intermediate rate grew by 0.3 % on the seasonally adjusted basis. The core component of PPI is viewed as a key leading indicator of inflation. Prices for intermediate goods faded by -3.2 % for the year.

Intermediate products are items such as steel, processed from iron ore, before it is made into cars.

Prices for finished consumer goods have rebounded from decline in previous period, finished consumer goods prices increased by 0.2 % on the seasonally adjusted basis. Prices for finished consumer goods rose by 0.8 % over the past 12 months.
