Consumer spending on the rise again in January

Personal Income and Its Disposition Report U.S. Economy




Personal income grew in January by 0.5 % on the seasonally adjusted basis at the annualized rate of $18.98 trillion, reported by the Commerce Department. Disposable income, money left over after taxes, remained unchanged by 0 %, averaging income $50,886 at the annualized rate for every American.

Consumer spending increased by 0.2 %
Spending on durable goods marked the biggest increase in January. Consumers' spending ranks as the single biggest contributor to the U.S. economy, accounting for as much as two-thirds of growth.

Wages have increased on the same pace like in previous month, with biggest gain in Trade, transportation, and utilities, wages in Government Sector grew as well, the contributions for employee pension and insurance benefits grew notably in January.


Higher government payments for social programs such as Medicaid and unemployment compensation, lifted January's personal income.


Although spending grew less than in the previous quarter and income grew at the higher rate, Americans were drawing their savings to compensate for higher spending, especially for sevices. Personal income has climbed in the fourth quarter by 3 %, while savings rate fell to 7.7 %, disposable income grew by 3 %.

Compensation of employees fell by -0.16 % from Dec. 2019 and advanced by 4.81 % from Jan. 2019, while wage & salary disbursements fell by -0.22 % sequentially and grew by 4.69 % from same month year ago, now representing 81.39 % of total compensation of employees.

Supplements to wages & salaries now representing 18.61 % of total compensation of employees with an increase of 0.09 % from Dec. 2019 and an increase by 5.36 % from Jan. 2019.

Supplements to wages & salaries now representing 18.61 % of total compensation of employees with an increase of 0.09 % from Dec. 2019 and an increase by 5.36 % from Jan. 2019.

   
Wage & salary disbursements
Wages & Salaries from private industries fell by -0.30 % sequentially and grew by 4.50 % from same month year ago, now representing 84.36 % of total wage & salary disbursements, while Wages & Salaries from government grew by 0.25 % from Dec. 2019 and increased by 5.74 % from Jan. 2019, now representing 15.64 % of total wage & salary disbursements. 

   Personal Income Receipts On Assets    Capital Consumption
Interest & Other
Personal interest income fell by -0.14 % sequentially while Personal dividend income grew by 1.21 % from Dec. 2019. Compare to same quarter a year ago, personal interest income went up by 6.68 % and personal dividend income grew by 11.85 %.
Personal interest payments excluding mortgage interests fell by -2.59 % sequentially and fell by -0.28 % from same month year ago.
Proprietors Income & Capital Consumption

Proprietors Income advanced by 0.99 % sequentially and grew by 4.71 % from same month year ago, now representing 8.94 % of total personal income.
Rental Income with capital consumption adjustment grew by 0.66 % from Dec. 2019 and increased by 3.31 % from same month year ago.

Interest & Other
Personal interest income fell by -0.14 % sequentially while Personal dividend income grew by 1.21 % from Dec. 2019. Compare to same quarter a year ago, personal interest income went up by 6.68 % and personal dividend income grew by 11.85 %.
Personal interest payments excluding mortgage interests fell by -2.59 % sequentially and fell by -0.28 % from same month year ago.

Proprietors Income & Capital Consumption

Proprietors Income advanced by 0.99 % sequentially and grew by 4.71 % from same month year ago, now representing 8.94 % of total personal income.
Rental Income with capital consumption adjustment grew by 0.66 % from Dec. 2019 and increased by 3.31 % from same month year ago.
