Consumer spending on the rise again in March

Personal Income and Its Disposition Report U.S. Economy




Personal income grew in double digits in March by 21.1 % on the seasonally adjusted basis at the annualized rate of $24.21 trillion. Meanwhile, disposable income, money left over after taxes, jumped by 23.6 %, averaging income $66,158 at the annualized rate for every American.

Consumer spending soared by 4.2 %. The pattern of income and spending growth in March halts a recent trend. Consumers had been financing their purchases mainly by dipping into their savings. Since spending rose more than income, the individual savings in March rate fell to 27.6 % from 13.6 % of disposable income.
Spending on durable goods marked the biggest increase in March. Consumers' spending ranks as the single biggest contributor to the U.S. economy, accounting for as much as two-thirds of growth.

The growth in Wages has accelerated, led by highest increase in Manufacturing, salaries in Government Sector grew as well, the supplements to wages and salaries grew less than total wages, as employer boost contributions for government social insurance.


Higher government payments for social programs such as Medicaid and unemployment compensation, lifted March's personal income.





For the year 202, real disposable income (Inflation-adjusted disposable income) fell -2.7 %, despite growing personal income. Consumer spending grew as well by 3.3 % , while income grew 6.1 %, savings rate was 16.3 %.

Compensation of employees grew by 1.08 % from Feb. 2021 and advanced by 2.48 % from Feb. 2020, while wage & salary disbursements rose by 1.17 % sequentially and grew by 2.71 % from same month year ago, now representing 81.58 % of total compensation of employees.

Supplements to wages & salaries now representing 18.42 % of total compensation of employees with an increase of 0.69 % from Feb. 2021 and an increase by 1.48 % from Feb. 2020.

Compensation of employees grew by 1.08 % from Feb. 2021 and advanced by 2.48 % from Feb. 2020, while wage & salary disbursements rose by 1.17 % sequentially and grew by 2.71 % from same month year ago, now representing 81.58 % of total compensation of employees.

Supplements to wages & salaries now representing 18.42 % of total compensation of employees with an increase of 0.69 % from Feb. 2021 and an increase by 1.48 % from Feb. 2020.

   
Wage & salary disbursements
Wages & Salaries from private industries rose by 1.21 % sequentially and grew by 3.60 % from same month year ago, now representing 85.10 % of total wage & salary disbursements, while Wages & Salaries from government grew by 0.94 % from Feb. 2021 and decreased by -2.11 % from Feb. 2020, now representing 14.90 % of total wage & salary disbursements. 

   Personal Income Receipts On Assets    Capital Consumption
Interest & Other
Personal interest income went up by 1.03 % sequentially while Personal dividend income grew by 0.02 % from Feb. 2021. Compare to same quarter a year ago, personal interest income fell by -3.05 % and personal dividend income fell by -4.04 %.
Personal interest payments excluding mortgage interests fell by -5.15 % sequentially and fell by -28.16 % from same month year ago.
Proprietors Income & Capital Consumption
Proprietors Income advanced by 8.86 % sequentially and grew by 3.43 % from same month year ago, now representing 7.54 % of total personal income.
Rental Income with capital consumption adjustment grew by 0.17 % from Feb. 2021 and increased by 3.25 % from same month year ago.
 Personal Income Receipts On Assets
Interest & Other
Personal interest income went up by 1.03 % sequentially while Personal dividend income grew by 0.02 % from Feb. 2021. Compare to same quarter a year ago, personal interest income fell by -3.05 % and personal dividend income fell by -4.04 %.
Personal interest payments excluding mortgage interests fell by -5.15 % sequentially and fell by -28.16 % from same month year ago.

Proprietors Income & Capital Consumption
Proprietors Income advanced by 8.86 % sequentially and grew by 3.43 % from same month year ago, now representing 7.54 % of total personal income.
Rental Income with capital consumption adjustment grew by 0.17 % from Feb. 2021 and increased by 3.25 % from same month year ago.
