Retail sales accelerate in October

U.S. Economy


The rate of growth in retail and food services total sales accelerated due to increase in higher sales on gasoline stations.
The Commerce Department announced U.S. retail sales including food services surged to $511.5 billion by 0.8 % in October to $511.5 billion on the seasonally adjusted basis. gasoline stations sales continue to trend higher by 3.52%, preventing consumers to spend more money on other items, as fuel outlays represent now 8.91% of total sales.
Improving rate in retail sales growth is a good news, as the retail sales account for about half of total consumer spending and about a third of final sales in the U.S. economy.
Higher retail spending, in turn, has spurred companies to boost their inventories in anticipation of rising sales. Retail sales grew by 4.6 % over the past 12 months, as the sales excluding motor vehicle and parts increased on the higher rate than total sales over the past 12 months.

Excluding the volatile auto sector sales increased sequentially by 0.7 % to $408.4 billion smaller than retail and food services sales on the seasonally adjusted basis.

Investors and the Federal Reserve usually view the core sales as a better gauge of retail sales because it excludes car sales, which often fluctuate.
U.S. retail and food services sales excluding motor vehicle and parts rose by 5.7 % in the past 12 months.
Sales of essentials have rebounded from decline in previous period, sales increased by 1 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, as gasoline station sales increased the most, representing 8.91 % of total U.S. retail and food services sales, while food services and drinking places sales fell. Over the past 12 months, sales of essentials grew by 7.4 %.

Retail Sales

In October, sales increased 0.5% at clothing and accessories stores, department stores up 1.3%.

Several other areas with sales growth were 0.7% at electronics and appliance stores, building materials dealers grew by 1%.

Meanwhile, sales fell -100% at internet retailers.
