Retail sales accelerate in June

ADVANCE MONTHLY SALES

U.S. Economy

The rate of growth in retail and food services total sales accelerated due to increase in high food services and drinking places sales.
U.S. retail sales increased by 0.4 % to $519.9 billion in June to $519.9 billion on the seasonally adjusted basis, reported by the Commerce Department. Improving rate in retail sales growth is a good news, as the retail sales account for about half of total consumer spending and about a third of final sales in the U.S. economy.
Higher retail spending, in turn, has spurred companies to boost their inventories in anticipation of rising sales. Sales advanced by 3 % for the year, as the sales excluding motor vehicle and parts increased on the higher rate than total sales over the past 12 months.

Fuels & Transportation

Retail and food services sales excluding motor vehicle and parts surged sequentially by 0.4 % equally to retail and food services sales on the seasonally adjusted basis, sales increased above average in food, beverage, furniture, home furnishings, and clothing stores. Electronics and appliance stores sales have sunk.
Sales excluding motor vehicle and parts, which some economists call control-group, because they believe it provides a better idea of longer-term sales trends.
Over the past 12 months, stripping out the volatile auto sector, the core rate of sales has climbed by 3.3 %.

Sales of essentials in a potentially worrisome sign, fell at virtually all the establishments that tend to rely on discretionary income — extra money consumers have left over after paying bills and for necessities, sales declined by -0.2 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, as gasoline station sales fell the most. Over the last 12 months, sales of essentials soared by 3.2 %.
