Retail advance less then forecast in June

U.S. Economy


The retail and food services sales continue to grow but on the slower pace, .
Retail sales including food services grew in June by 0.5 % on the seasonally adjusted basis to $506.8 billion, reported by the Commerce Department. gasoline stations sales continue to trend higher by 1.02%, preventing consumers to spend more money on other items, as fuel outlays represent now 8.6% of total sales.
Wall Street pays close attention to the retail and food services sales report, as retail sales account for about half of total consumer spending and about a third of final sales in the U.S. economy, so any pullback in spending has broad repercussions.
Higher retail spending, in turn, has spurred companies to boost their inventories in anticipation of rising sales. U.S. retail and food services sales jumped by 6.8 % for the year, led by increase in gasoline stations sales by 21.1 %.

Retail Sales

In June, sales increased 0.8% at building materials dealers, health and personal care stores increased by 2.2%.

Meanwhile, sales decreased -0.4% at electronics and appliance stores, internet retailers -100%.

Sales of essentials have increased by smaller rate than a month ago, sales increased by 0.7 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, food services and drinking places sales grew above averge, although sales in food and beverage stores declined. Compare to a year ago sales of essentials jumped by 9.3 %.

Retail and food services sales excluding motor vehicle and parts surged sequentially by 0.4 % to $402.9 billion smaller than retail and food services sales on the seasonally adjusted basis.
Sales excluding motor vehicle and parts, which some economists call control-group, because they believe it provides a better idea of longer-term sales trends.

The deceleration in spending is the latest in a series of indicators suggesting the U.S. economy has slowed, at least temporarily.
Over the last 12 months, excluding the volatile auto sector sales soared by 7.1 %.
