Retail advance less then forecast in August

U.S. Economy


The retail and food services sales continue to grow but on the slower pace, .
U.S. retail sales increased by 0.4 % in August to $526.1 billion on the seasonally adjusted basis, reported by the Commerce Department. August advance follows a gain of 0.8% in July.

Wall Street pays close attention to the retail and food services sales report, as retail sales account for about half of total consumer spending and about a third of final sales in the U.S. economy, so any pullback in spending has broad repercussions. Over the past 12 months, meanwhile sales excluding volatile motor vehicle and parts sales, increased less than overall retail sales, over the last 12 months, retail sales have climbed by 3.4 %.

Fuels & Transportation

July retail and food services sales were revised to $524.2 billion to show 0.8 % growth.
Sales excluding motor vehicle and parts remained unchanged sequentially at $419.9 billion smaller than retail and food services sales on the seasonally adjusted basis.

Some economists prefer core sales over the total retail and food services sales, because they believe it provides a better idea of longer-term retail sales trends.

The deceleration in spending is the latest in a series of indicators suggesting the U.S. economy has slowed, at least temporarily.
Over the past 12 months, stripping out the volatile auto sector, the core rate of sales has climbed by 3.3 %.
Sales of essentials in a potentially worrisome sign, fell at virtually all the establishments that tend to rely on discretionary income — extra money consumers have left over after paying bills and for necessities, sales sunk by -0.8 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, food services and drinking places sales decrease the most, by -1.23 %. Sale of essentials like food and gasoline jumped by 2.8 % for the year.

Retail Sales

In August, sales increased 1.4% at building materials dealers, health and personal care stores increased by 0.7%.

Meanwhile, sales declined -1.1% at department stores, clothing and accessories stores -0.9%, internet retailers fell by -100%.
