Construction of new homes in U.S. continued to grow in December

Housing Starts U.S. Economic Indicators



U.S. housing starts grew in double digits in December by 16.9 % on the seasonally adjusted basis to annual rate of 1,608,000 units, an increase of 233,000 units from 1,375,000 in November, reported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Construction of new homes in U.S. increased across many sectors including, multi-family housing units, northeast and midwest.

Housing normally has a wide-ranging influence on the rest of the economy because so many raw materials and finished goods are required to build homes and furnish them after sale.

Building permits deteriorated by -3.9 % or 58,000 units to an annual rate of 1,608,000 units, from 1,375,000 in November on the seasonally adjusted basis Demand for building permits fell the most in the Northeast and it was concentrated in multi-dwelling buildings such as apartments.

The issuance of new permits declined -15.7 % to annual rate of 133,000 units in the Northeast while the permits for multi-family units decreased -9.6 % accounting for 34.39 % of total building permits issued.

Permits indicate whether demand for new homes is growing or slowing. Over the past 12 months, monthly building permits grew by 6.8 %

From Dec. 2018, housing starts jumped by 49.2 %, in midwest housing starts rose the most, by 103.2 %.


Permits By Region
  • In Northeast housing units were authorized at seasonally adjusted annual rate of 134,000 units, an decrease of 25,000 units, or -15.72 % from 159,000 units Nov. 2019 and an increase of 21.82 % from 110,000 units Dec. 2018.


  • In Midwest housing units were authorized at seasonally adjusted annual rate of 207,000 units, an increase of 1,000 units, or 0.49 % from 206,000 units Nov. 2019 and an increase of 42.76 % from 145,000 units Dec. 2018.


  • In West housing units were authorized at seasonally adjusted annual rate of 387,000 units, an increase of 14,000 units, or 3.75 % from 373,000 units Nov. 2019 and an increase of 1.04 % from 383,000 units Dec. 2018.
  • In South housing units were authorized at seasonally adjusted annual rate of 688,000 units, an decrease of 48,000 units, or -6.52 % from 736,000 units Nov. 2019 and an decrease of 0.00 % from 688,000 units Dec. 2018.
