August housing starts unchanged

Housing Starts U.S. Economic Indicators


U.S. home construction remain unchanged in August, but are up over the past 12 months,
U.S. housing starts remained unchanged in August on the seasonally adjusted basis to annual rate of 1,364,000 units, reported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. From Aug. 2018, housing starts jumped by 7.6 %, where construction in the Northeast grew the most, by 33.3 %.

Building permits have increased by smaller rate than a month ago, building permits soared by 7.7 % or 102,000 units to an annual rate of 1,364,000 units, from 1,364,000 in July on the seasonally adjusted basis Most of growth took place in the Northeast and it was concentrated in multi-dwelling buildings such as apartments.

New permits went up 26.9 % to annual rate of 319,000 units in the Northeast while permits for multi-family units grew 13.3 % accounting for 32.62 % of total permits issued.

Permits give an indication of whether demand for new homes is growing or slowing. Compare to a year ago monthly building permits jumped by 13.6 %




Permits By Region
  • In Northeast housing units were authorized at seasonally adjusted annual rate of 151,000 units, an increase of 32,000 units, or 26.89 % from 119,000 units July 2019 and an increase of 48.04 % from 102,000 units Aug. 2018.


  • In Midwest housing units were authorized at seasonally adjusted annual rate of 189,000 units, an increase of 24,000 units, or 14.55 % from 165,000 units July 2019 and an decrease of -0.53 % from 190,000 units Aug. 2018.


  • In West housing units were authorized at seasonally adjusted annual rate of 331,000 units, an decrease of 28,000 units, or -7.80 % from 359,000 units July 2019 and an increase of 7.82 % from 307,000 units Aug. 2018.
  • In South housing units were authorized at seasonally adjusted annual rate of 748,000 units, an increase of 74,000 units, or 10.98 % from 674,000 units July 2019 and an increase of 15.08 % from 650,000 units Aug. 2018.
