Tesla Inc Contracts
|
In February 2025, amidst a pronounced shift in the automotive landscape, Tesla Inc. found itself grappling with an unexpected and severe decline in sales in Germany, one of its most pivotal markets. Registrations of new Tesla vehicles plummeted by a staggering 76.3% compared to the same month the previous year, with just 1,429 units sold, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority. This steep decline follows a nearly 60% drop recorded in January, flagging significant questions about the brand s future viability in Europe at a time when overall electric vehicle (EV) sales surged by 30.8%.The backdrop to this decline is critical: while Tesla sputters, the landscape for electric vehicles in Germany is v...

Tesla Inc's Comment on Supply Chain
Model S uses over 2,000 purchased parts which we source globally from over
300 suppliers, the majority of whom are currently our single source suppliers
for these components. We have developed close relationships with several key
suppliers particularly in the procurement of cells and certain other key system
parts. While we obtain components from multiple sources whenever possible, similar
to other automobile manufacturers, many of the components used in our vehicles
are purchased by us from a single source.
To date, we have not qualified alternative sources for most of the single
sourced components used in our vehicles and we generally do not maintain long-term
agreements with our suppliers. While we believe that we may be able to establish
alternate supply relationships and can obtain or engineer replacement components
for our single source components, we may be unable to do so in the short term
or at all at prices or costs that are favorable to us. For example, while several
sources of the battery cell we have selected for our battery packs are available,
we have fully qualified only two cells from one supplier for these cells. Any
disruption in the supply of either battery cells could temporarily disrupt production
of the vehicles until such time as a different cell is fully qualified and there
can be no assurance that we would be able to successfully retain alternative
sources of supply on a timely basis. Moreover, battery cell manufacturers may
not supply us at reasonable prices or on reasonable terms or may choose to refuse
to supply electric vehicle manufacturers to the extent they determine that the
vehicles are not sufficiently safe.
We use various raw materials in our business including aluminum, steel, nickel
and copper. The prices for these raw materials fluctuate depending on market
conditions and global demand for these materials. We believe that we have adequate
supplies or sources of availability of the raw materials necessary to meet our
manufacturing and supply requirements. There are always risks and uncertainties,
however, with respect to the supply of raw materials that could impact their
availability in sufficient quantities or reasonable prices to meet our needs.
Tesla works with several key battery suppliers to ensure we have the necessary components for our electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage products. Here?s a look at our major partners:
1. Panasonic
Partnership: Panasonic has been our longest-standing partner, providing battery cells for our vehicles since the Model S.
Gigafactory Collaboration: Together, we co-own Gigafactory 1 in Nevada, where Panasonic produces lithium-ion battery cells, and we assemble them into battery packs.
Contribution: Panasonic primarily supplies us with nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) batteries, which power our long-range EVs.
2. CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited)
Partnership: CATL is a key supplier for the Model 3 and Model Y we manufacture in China.
Battery Chemistry: They provide lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are lower-cost and cobalt-free, though less energy-dense compared to nickel-based batteries. We use these in our standard range vehicles.
3. LG Energy Solution
Partnership: LG Energy Solution, a subsidiary of LG Chem, supplies batteries for our Model 3 and Model Y vehicles made in China and some other regions outside North America.
Battery Chemistry: Like Panasonic, LG provides us with nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries, which are widely used in EVs.
4. BYD (Build Your Dreams)
Partnership: While not as prominent as our other suppliers, there have been reports of us considering BYD as a partner, particularly for LFP batteries in the Chinese market.
Our Own Efforts
Battery Day Announcements: We?re also working on developing our own in-house battery technology, aiming to produce our 4680 battery cells. These cells are larger and designed to improve range and reduce costs. We?re scaling up production at our facilities, including Gigafactory Texas and Berlin.
By diversifying our battery supply chain, we can improve battery performance, reduce costs, and meet the growing demand for our vehicles worldwide.
Tesla relies on a wide range of suppliers beyond just battery manufacturers to build our electric vehicles (EVs) and energy products. These suppliers provide everything from raw materials to specialized components. Some of our key suppliers include:
1. Semiconductor Suppliers
Infineon Technologies: They supply various power semiconductors, including IGBTs and MOSFETs, used in our power electronics.
NXP Semiconductors: Provides microcontrollers for our in-vehicle systems and autonomous driving technology.
STMicroelectronics: Supplies components for our infotainment and electric control units.
2. Raw Materials Suppliers
Glencore: We source cobalt from Glencore for our battery production. Cobalt is a key material in lithium-ion batteries.
Albemarle Corporation: Supplies us with lithium, another essential material for our batteries.
BHP: Provides nickel, which is crucial for the production of our high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
3. Automotive Parts Suppliers
Brembo: Supplies brakes for our vehicles, including high-performance braking systems.
Continental AG: Provides tires, electronics, and other automotive components.
Hota Industrial: Supplies us with gears and transmission parts.
4. Glass and Interior Components
AGC Automotive: Supplies automotive glass used in our vehicles.
Fuyao Glass: Another supplier of glass components, primarily for our windshields and windows.
Inteva Products: Provides interior components such as door panels and dashboards for our vehicles.
5. Autonomous Driving and Sensors
Aptiv: Provides sensor and electrical distribution systems for our Autopilot and self-driving technologies.
Luminar (potentially for future use): We?ve considered using Luminar?s LIDAR technology in some of our applications.
6. Energy and Electronics
Samsung SDI: Another supplier of battery cells, particularly for our energy storage products.
Foxconn: Provides electronic components for our infotainment systems and in-vehicle electronics.
7. Logistics and Assembly
Modine Manufacturing: Provides cooling systems that help regulate our battery temperatures.
Jabil Inc.: Supplies various electronic and mechanical components for our manufacturing needs.
8. Software and Networking
NVIDIA: Initially, we used NVIDIA chips for our self-driving systems, though we?ve since developed our own custom Full Self-Driving (FSD) computer.
Broadcom: Supplies chips for networking and communications within our vehicles.
Our supply chain is vast and constantly evolving as we scale production and innovate across our product line. We also focus heavily on vertical integration, making efforts to produce more components in-house, such as developing our own chips and battery technology.
