Median Market Cap

Financial Term

Median Market Cap is a measure used in the financial industry to evaluate the size and performance of publicly traded companies. It is the middle point of the market capitalizations of all the companies in a specific market index or sector.

Market capitalization, or market cap for short, is calculated by multiplying the number of outstanding shares of a company with its current market price per share. Median Market Cap refers to the market cap of the company that sits at the exact middle of the market cap range of the companies being analyzed.

As an example, if there are ten companies in a particular market index, the median market cap would be the market cap of the fifth company (if the companies are arranged in alphabetical or numerical order by market cap).

Median Market Cap is used by investors and analysts to gain a better understanding of the size and composition of a particular market or sector. It can also be used to compare the market cap of individual companies to the median of their peers, providing insight into the relative size and growth potential of a particular company.

A measure, at a point in time, of the value of a derivative or foreign exchange contract in the open market. When the mark-to-market value is positive, it indicates the counterparty owes the Firm and, therefore, creates a repayment risk for the Firm. When the mark-to-market value is negative, the Firm owes the counterparty; in this situation, the Firm does not have repayment risk.
