Bauxite

Bauxite is a sedimentary rock primarily composed of aluminum hydroxides and other compounds such as silica, iron oxide, and titanium dioxide. It is the main source of aluminum in the world and is mined in several countries including Australia, Guinea, Jamaica, and Brazil.

Bauxite is primarily used in the manufacturing industry to produce aluminum. It is first mined, then refined into alumina (aluminum oxide) through a process called the Bayer process. Alumina is then converted into pure aluminum through the smelting process using an electrolytic process called Hall-Héroult reduction.

Apart from aluminum production, bauxite is also used in other manufacturing industries. It is used as a raw material in the production of various refractory materials such as bricks, castable refractories, and insulation materials. Additionally, it is also used as a fluxing agent in steel production and as a lining material in high-temperature furnaces.

Furthermore, bauxite is also commonly used in the oil and gas drilling industry as a proppant. Proppants are materials such as sand, bauxite, and ceramics that are used to hold open fractures in rocks during hydraulic fracturing operations.
