Angiogenesis

Health Care Term

Angiogenesis is the process of forming new blood vessels from existing ones. It is a normal process in the body that occurs during growth and development, wound healing, and menstruation. However, it can also be pathological, as it is involved in the growth and spread of cancerous tumors.

In the health care industry, angiogenesis is used in a variety of ways. One of the most important applications is in the treatment of cancer. Anti-angiogenic drugs, such as bevacizumab and sorafenib, have been developed to inhibit the growth of blood vessels in tumors and thus reduce their growth and spread. These drugs are used in combination with chemotherapy and other cancer treatments.

Angiogenesis is also important in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Drugs such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and statins can stimulate angiogenesis and promote the growth of new blood vessels in the heart, improving blood flow and reducing the risk of heart attack.
