Neurotransmitter

Health Care Term

A neurotransmitter is a chemical messenger that transmits signals between neurons, or between neurons and other cells such as muscles or glands. They are responsible for regulating many processes in the body, including mood, appetite, sleep, and pain.

There are many different neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine, each with their own specific functions and effects.

In the healthcare industry, neurotransmitters are often used as a target for medications. For example, antidepressants often work by increasing levels of serotonin and/or norepinephrine in the brain. Parkinson*s disease medications work by increasing levels of dopamine.

Neurotransmitter testing is also becoming more common in healthcare, particularly in psychiatry. These tests can help identify imbalances in neurotransmitters that may be contributing to mental health issues, and can help guide treatment with targeted medications.
