Carmax Inc's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers

The U.S. used vehicle market in 2025 included over 18,000 franchised dealers selling late-model vehicles. Approximately 39 million used vehicles were sold, with about 20 million being between 0 and 10 years old. The company was the largest retailer of used vehicles in the U.S., accounting for approximately 3.6% of these sales. Competition includes both traditional automotive dealers and online platforms, as well as in-person and online wholesale auctions. The company's auctions primarily focus on older, higher mileage vehicles, while competitors auction vehicles of all ages. In the auto finance sector, the company's CarMax Auto Finance (CAF) competes mainly with banks and credit unions that offer direct financing to used vehicle buyers. CAF's competitive position is based on being the primary finance source for the company's customers.
