Methodology: Competitive Analysis Pages
Peer & Competitor Identification, Sourcing
Named competitors are identified from a company's own reports (named-competitor disclosures) and corroborating sources. Each named relationship carries a basis and a confidence rating that reflects the strength of that evidence, not a guess.
Underlying data draws on three source classes: the subject company's own official press releases and filed reports; CSIMarket's own market research; and the public press releases and filed reports of the other companies named as competitors.
Focus of this report family: publicly traded companies.
Performance Group Definitions
Where a page splits competitors into groups, the shares are trailing-12-month and defined as:
- Profitable — net margin > 0
- Expanding — revenue growth > 0
- Growing faster than the industry — revenue growth above the industry's own median
- Financially distressed — Piotroski F-Score of 2 or below (the standard "weak" cutoff from Piotroski's own methodology)
Separately, "Similar Growth & Profitability" peers are the closest peers by combined revenue growth, operating margin and ROIC; "High-Confidence" peers are drawn from the named-competitor list above filtered to the higher confidence ratings; "Similar-Size" peers are chosen by closeness in market-cap rank within the same industry classification.
Market Structure & Concentration (HHI)
Market-capitalization share and concentration are measured across every company in the subject company's industry classification — a broader set than the named-competitor/peer list used elsewhere on the same page.
Concentration is summarized with the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), using U.S. antitrust guidance: below 1,500 is unconcentrated, 1,500 to 2,500 is moderately concentrated, above 2,500 is highly concentrated.
Profitability & Valuation Benchmarks
Profitability & Cost Structure: trailing-12-month margins from SEC-filed financials. Operating margin is compared to the industry median; gross margin, EBITDA margin and capital intensity are compared to the live industry average.
Valuation vs Competitive Position: valuation multiples are compared to the industry average (excluding loss-making/negative-equity outliers), alongside returns on capital, for context on whether a premium or discount lines up with measurably stronger or weaker returns.
Strategic Group Map
Every company in the subject company's industry and named-competitor list is plotted by trailing-12-month revenue growth and operating margin. The subject company's closest peers by combined growth, margin and ROIC are labeled on the chart.
BCG Growth-Share Matrix
Relative market share (vs. the subject company's largest competitor by market cap) is plotted against industry revenue growth, using the standard textbook thresholds of 1.0x share and 10% growth. This is a common strategy-framework convention, not a precision instrument.
GE/McKinsey Matrix
A CSIMarket composite, not a standard field: each axis is an equal-weighted average of three factors already shown elsewhere on the same page — industry growth, industry profitability and competitive rivalry for the Industry Attractiveness axis; relative market share, profitability and growth vs. industry for the Competitive Strength axis. Disclosed as a designed methodology, not a precision measurement.
Porter's Five Forces
Only the forces this data can support honestly are shown; the other three (supplier power, buyer power, threat of substitutes) are marked as not assessed rather than guessed.
- Competitive Rivalry — a mechanical translation of the industry's HHI (see Market Structure & Concentration above).
- Barriers to Entry — a mechanical translation of capital intensity (capex / revenue) vs. the industry average (see Profitability & Cost Structure above).
This is a partial, data-grounded application of the framework, not a complete strategic assessment. Supplier power and buyer power are not assessed here — see a company's dedicated Suppliers and Customers pages for concentration data; threat of substitutes has no systematic data source in this system and is not estimated.
SWOT Analysis
Mechanical, rule-based SWOT: every bullet is a fixed rule applied to a metric already shown elsewhere on the same page (Market Structure, Profitability, Valuation, Run-Rate, Stock Performance, Quality Breadth), reusing a figure already sourced and cited there. A blank quadrant means no rule was met, not that none apply. Nothing in this section is generated narrative or independent analyst judgment.
Business Segment & Geographic Data Notes
Business Segment Mix: revenue by operating segment or division, as named and reported by each company. Segment names are the filer's own and are not standardized across companies — do not assume a same-named or similarly-named segment is defined identically between two companies. Shares are of each company's own total revenue and are not required to sum to 100% (intersegment revenue, unallocated items).
Geographic Exposure: revenue by country/region as reported in each company's most recent report. Disclosure granularity varies by filer (some report by country, others by broad region) and is shown as disclosed.
