In the Hawaii service, primary U.S.-flagged Jones Act competitors include Pasha, which provides container and roll-on/roll-off services between California ports and Hawaii, and Aloha Marine Lines, a U.S.-flagged Jones Act barge operator serving routes between Seattle and Oahu. In the Alaska service, Matson's main U.S.-flagged Jones Act competitor is Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc., offering roll-on/roll-off services between Tacoma and Anchorage. Additional U.S.-flagged Jones Act barge operators in Alaska include Alaska Marine Lines and Samson Tug & Barge, serving various Alaskan ports. Foreign-flagged vessels provide shipping alternatives for seafood exports from Alaska to international destinations, with CMA CGM as the primary competitor for Matson's AAX service between Dutch Harbor and Asia. In the China service, major competitors include international transpacific carriers CMA CGM, Zim, Hede, and Cosco, as well as air freight carriers.

Question Mark Star Dog Cash Cow Relative Market Share (vs largest competitor) Industry Revenue Growth (%) Matson Inc

Matson Inc falls in the Dog quadrant: relative market share of 0.08x vs its largest competitor, in an industry growing revenue -0.6% (median, trailing 12 months).

Source: CSIMarket API (market-cap share and industry revenue growth). The 10% growth and 1.0x share lines are standard textbook thresholds, not derived from this industry's own distribution. A caveat worth reading alongside this chart: Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd alone holds 41% of this industry's market cap. In an industry this dominated by one leader, the framework will place nearly every OTHER company in "Dog" or "Question Mark" purely because relative share is measured against that leader, regardless of how strong those other companies actually are on their own fundamentals. Check the Profitability, Valuation and Financial Strength sections above before treating this quadrant label as a verdict.

Matson Inc's SWOT

Every point below is a fixed rule applied to a metric already shown elsewhere on this page (Market Structure, Profitability, Valuation, Run-Rate, Stock Performance, Quality Breadth) not an independent strategic assessment. A blank quadrant means no rule was met, not that none apply.

Strengths

  • Operating margin 7.6 points above the industry median.
  • Latest-quarter revenue run-rate is accelerating (+12.1% annualized vs trailing 12 months).
  • Outperforming the U.S.A. 500 over the trailing 12 months.

Weaknesses

  • Return on equity 12.6 points below the industry aggregate.
  • Low relative market share vs the industry leader (0.08x).

Opportunities

  • Trades at a lower P/E than the industry average (12.3x vs 18.1x) despite a higher return on invested capital -- a possible re-rating opportunity.

Threats

  • Industry dominated by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, holding 41.35 % of industry market cap.
  • High capital intensity requires continuous reinvestment just to keep pace with the industry.
