The company competes with major pharmaceutical, specialty pharmaceutical, and biotechnology firms, as well as compounding facilities, academic institutions, governmental agencies, and public and private research organizations. For YCANTH (VP-102), which targets common warts, competition includes over-the-counter products, cryotherapy, curettage, laser surgery, and other off-label treatments. There are currently no FDA-approved prescription pharmaceutical therapies for common warts. Several companies are developing product candidates for this indication. For VP-315, multiple companies are developing therapies for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) at various clinical stages. The company holds three issued U.S. utility patents related to YCANTH (VP-102), with the earliest expiring in 2037, but acknowledges risks associated with patent expiration and potential competitor design-arounds.
