Clearside Biomedical Inc's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers

The company faces competition from major pharmaceutical, specialty pharmaceutical, and biotechnology companies, as well as government agencies and research institutions. Its product XIPERE competes with other commercially available forms of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) and corticosteroids, although none are specifically approved for macular edema associated with uveitis. Bristol-Myers Squibb markets TA under the brand name Kenalog, which has several generic equivalents and is used off-label for intraocular inflammation. Harrow's injectable TA product, Triesence, acquired from Alcon, is approved in the U.S. for ocular conditions. Oxular, acquired by Regeneron in December 2024, may have its product OXU-001 used off-label for macular edema associated with uveitis if approved. The company's product CLS-AX competes with anti-VEGF drugs, the current standard of care for retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), as well as other drug candidates such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Pfizer markets Axitinib (Inlyta) for renal cell carcinoma, but it is not approved for ocular indications. Genentech offers several competing anti-VEGF products, including Lucentis, Avastin, and Susvimo, which are used for wet AMD, macular edema following RVO, diabetic retinopathy, and other retinal diseases. Competitors identified include Alcon, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Genentech, Harrow, Oxular, Pfizer, and Regeneron.
