Fossil Group Inc's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers

The company operates in highly competitive and fragmented markets, including traditional watches, leather goods, sunglasses, and jewelry. Its traditional watch segment competes with established manufacturers, importers, and distributors such as Armitron, Citizen, Gucci, Guess?, Kenneth Cole, LVMH Group, Movado, Raymond Weil, Seiko, Swatch, Swiss Army, TAG Heuer, and Timex. The leather goods, sunglasses, and jewelry businesses face competition from numerous established companies with expertise in product development, marketing, and distribution. Competitors include distributors importing watches and accessories, U.S. companies with foreign manufacturing relationships, and domestic producers. The company also contended with competition in the smartwatch market from technology brands Apple, Garmin, Google, Samsung, and fitness brand Fitbit, which often have greater resources for product development and marketing. The company exited the smartwatch category to focus on traditional watches. Its business model involves owning distribution in key markets and offering a globally recognized portfolio of proprietary and licensed products, enabling it to bypass local distributor costs and achieve higher margins compared to smaller competitors.

Weaknesses

  • Operating margin 6.8 points below the industry median.
  • Return on equity 104.6 points below the industry aggregate.
  • Latest-quarter revenue run-rate is decelerating (-14.9% annualized vs trailing 12 months).
  • Low relative market share vs the industry leader (0.00x).

No rule matched.

Threats

  • Tracked peer group's revenue run-rate is broadly decelerating (-6.4% annualized).
