Merck And Co Inc's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers

The Company operates in highly competitive and regulated pharmaceutical markets. Its competitors include global research-based pharmaceutical companies, smaller research firms with limited therapeutic focus, generic drug manufacturers, and animal health care companies. The Company faces challenges from generic and biosimilar competition as its products mature, technological advances by competitors, industry consolidation, patents granted to competitors, competitive combination products, new competitor products, availability of generic or biosimilar versions of competitors' branded products, and new clinical trial or post-marketing surveillance data. Patent rights are increasingly contested by competitors, with uncertain outcomes that may impact commercialization, sales, royalties, or intangible asset impairments. The Company is jointly developing and commercializing Keytruda with AstraZeneca.
