United States Steel's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers

U. S. Steel operates within the global steel industry, which is cyclical, highly competitive, and marked by global overcapacity. The company's competitive position is affected by factors including cost structure, labor costs, environmental compliance costs, global capacity, technological innovations, sustainable products, and government support. U. S. Steel competes with various North American and international steel producers, including integrated producers utilizing iron ore and coke, Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) producers using steel scrap and other iron-bearing feedstocks, and slab re-rollers who primarily import semi-finished products to convert into sheet products. Additionally, alternative materials such as aluminum, plastics, and composites present competition in the market.

United States Steel's SWOT

Every point below is a fixed rule applied to a metric already shown elsewhere on this page (Market Structure, Profitability, Valuation, Run-Rate, Stock Performance, Quality Breadth) — not an independent strategic assessment. A blank quadrant means no rule was met, not that none apply.

Strengths

  • Outperforming the U.S.A. 500 over the trailing 12 months.

Weaknesses

  • Return on equity 6.7 points below the industry aggregate.
  • Latest-quarter revenue run-rate is decelerating (-2.0% annualized vs trailing 12 months).
  • Piotroski F-Score of 2 or below, the standard financial-distress signal.

Opportunities

No rule matched.

Threats

  • Tracked peer group's revenue run-rate is broadly decelerating (-32.7% annualized).
  • High capital intensity requires continuous reinvestment just to keep pace with the industry.

Methodology: mechanical, rule-based SWOT. Each bullet reuses a figure already sourced and cited elsewhere on this page; nothing here is generated narrative or independent analyst judgment.
