Sterling Bancorp's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers
The greater New York metropolitan region is a highly competitive market area with
a concentration of financial institutions, many of which are significantly larger
institutions with greater financial resources than us, and many of which are our
competitors to varying degrees. Our competition for loans comes principally from
commercial banks, savings banks, mortgage banking companies, credit unions, insurance
companies and other financial services companies. Our most direct competition
for deposits has historically come from commercial banks, savings banks and credit
unions. We face additional competition for deposits from non-depository competitors
such as mutual funds, securities and brokerage firms and insurance companies.
We have emphasized relationship banking and the advantage of local decision-making
in our banking business. We do not rely on any individual, group, or entity for
a material portion of our deposits. Net interest income could be adversely affected
should competitive pressures cause us to increase the interest rates paid on deposits
in order to maintain our market share.
