Description of Smithfield Foods Inc
Smithfield Foods, Inc., headquartered in Smithfield, Virginia since 1936, is an American food company specializing in packaged meats and fresh pork products primarily in the United States. The company employs approximately 32,000 people in the U.S. and 2,500 in Mexico. Its brand portfolio includes Smithfield®, Eckrich®, and Nathan’s Famous®. Smithfield operates through three main segments: Packaged Meats, Fresh Pork, and Hog Production, as well as two additional segments, Mexico and Bioscience.
The Packaged Meats segment processes fresh meat into products such as bacon, sausage, hot dogs, deli meats, and prepared foods, marketed under core brands and private labels. The Fresh Pork segment processes live hogs into primal and sub-primal cuts for domestic and export markets. The Hog Production segment raises hogs on company-owned and contract farms, supplying the Fresh Pork segment and selling feed, grains, and services externally. The Mexico segment operates through a 66% interest in Granjas Carroll de Mexico, producing fresh pork for the Mexican market. The Bioscience segment manufactures heparin products for the healthcare industry.
Recent developments include plans for a $1.3 billion processing facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and an acquisition agreement for Nathan’s Famous Inc., expected to close in 2026. Smithfield completed its initial public offering in January 2025 and is majority owned by Hong Kong-based WH Group Limited.
The company operates through three primary reportable segments: Packaged Meats, Fresh Pork, and Hog Production. The Packaged Meats segment processes fresh meat into various packaged products, including bacon, sausage, hot dogs, deli and lunch meats, dry sausage, ham, ready-to-eat items, and prepared foods. Approximately 80% of its raw materials are sourced from the Fresh Pork segment. Key brands in this segment include Smithfield, Eckrich, Nathan’s Famous, Farmland, Armour, Farmer John, Kretschmar, Krakus, John Morrell, Cook’s, Gwaltney, Carando, Margherita, Curly’s, and Smithfield Culinary.
The Fresh Pork segment processes live hogs into primal, sub-primal, and offal products. About 40% of its raw materials come from the Hog Production segment, with the remainder sourced from partnered farmers. Approximately one-third of fresh pork products are transferred to the Packaged Meats segment, while the rest are sold externally to domestic retail, foodservice, industrial customers, and export markets including China, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, and Canada.
The Hog Production segment manages hog production on company-owned and contract farms, with nearly all hogs processed by the Fresh Pork segment. This segment also sells livestock feed, grains, and provides transportation and ancillary services to external customers.
Additional operating segments include Mexico, where the company holds a 66% interest in Granjas Carroll de Mexico, S. de R.L. de C.V. (Altosano), which raises hogs and produces fresh pork products primarily for the Mexican market, and Bioscience, which manufactures heparin products from hog raw materials for the healthcare industry.
The company has announced plans to build a combined fresh pork and packaged meats processing facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with an estimated investment of up to $1.3 billion over three years, subject to regulatory approvals.
