Safe Bulkers Inc 's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers
We operate in highly competitive markets that are based primarily on supply and
demand. Our business fluctuates in line with the main patterns of trade of the
major drybulk cargoes and varies according to changes in the supply and demand
for these items. We believe we differentiate ourselves from our competition by
providing young, modern vessels with advanced designs and technological specifications.
Our fleet had an average age of 5.8 years compared to an industry average of approximately
8.9 years. Upon delivery of our contracted newbuilds vessel, the majority of our
fleet will have been built in Japanese shipyards, which we believe provides us
with an advantage in attracting large, well-established customers, including Japanese
customers.
The drybulk sector is characterized by relatively low barriers to entry, and ownership
of drybulk vessels is highly fragmented. In general, we compete with other owners
of Panamax class or larger drybulk vessels for charters based upon price, customer
relationships, operating expertise, professional reputation and size, age, location
and condition of the vessel.
