Description of Legence
The company provides engineering, installation, and maintenance services for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems in buildings. It delivers integrated solutions aimed at reducing total costs, minimizing change orders, and accelerating project timelines, with a focus on sectors such as technology, life sciences, healthcare, and education. In 2025, these sectors accounted for over half of its revenues. The company designs, fabricates, and installs complex HVAC, process piping, and other MEP systems for new facilities, as well as upgrades existing buildings to improve performance and efficiency. In 2025, approximately 40% of revenues were derived from new building projects, while 60% came from retrofits, upgrades, and maintenance. It operates through two segments: Engineering & Consulting, which includes engineering and design as well as program and project management services; and Installation & Maintenance, which encompasses installation and fabrication along with maintenance and service. The company employs about 7,000 people across 116 locations in 46 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. From 2019 to 2025, it served approximately 20,000 clients, including large technology and industrial companies and public sector institutions, often engaging through intermediaries such as architects and general contractors. The company markets under the name Legence and employs a seller-doer sales approach.
The company operates through two segments: Engineering & Consulting and Installation & Maintenance. The Engineering & Consulting segment designs HVAC and other MEP systems for buildings, develops strategies to reduce energy usage and enhance sustainability, and provides program and project management services for installation and retrofit projects. This segment's two main service offerings are Engineering & Design, which includes planning, design, and engineering services for HVAC, process piping, and other MEP systems, accounting for approximately 59% of its 2025 revenues; and Program & Project Management, which includes facility assessments, space analyses, funding identification, construction management, and design-build services through ESPCs, accounting for approximately 41% of its 2025 revenues. The Installation & Maintenance segment fabricates and installs HVAC systems, process piping, and other MEP systems in new and existing buildings and provides ongoing preventative and corrective maintenance services. Its two primary service offerings are Installation & Fabrication, which includes HVAC, electrical, plumbing, process, and control system installations, refurbishments, renovations, design-build and plan and specification projects, fabrication of customized components, and modular construction services, representing approximately 82% of its 2025 revenues; and Maintenance & Service, which includes preventative maintenance, emergency repair, break-fix services, facility energy analysis, automation, optimization, system certification, and testing, typically provided under annual or longer-term agreements, representing approximately 18% of its 2025 revenues.
