American National Bankshares Inc's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers

The Company operates primarily in south central Virginia and north central North Carolina, with a significant presence in Roanoke, Virginia, strengthened by its 2019 acquisition of HomeTown Bankshares Corporation. It faces competition from national, regional, and community banks, as well as other financial institutions including finance companies, mutual and money market fund providers, financial technology companies, brokerage firms, wealth management firms, insurance companies, credit unions, and mortgage companies. Nonbank competitors increasingly offer products and services traditionally provided by banks and may benefit from lighter regulatory oversight. Competition for deposits is particularly strong in North Carolina's larger metropolitan areas, mainly from commercial banks and credit unions, including many regional and national banks. While the Company has experienced strong loan growth, it faces challenges in expanding its deposit market share. Both the Company and the Bank are subject to extensive federal and state regulation, and changes in laws, regulations, and policies can affect their operations. Market factors such as interest rate fluctuations, emerging financial technology competitors, and adverse industry developments can influence deposit access and customer confidence.
