Bitcoin (BTC) is a decentralized digital currency, also known as a cryptocurrency, that is not controlled by any government or financial institution. It was created in 2009 by an unknown person or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.
Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public ledger called the blockchain, which is a decentralized database that stores a record of all transactions in chronological order. The blockchain is maintained by a network of nodes that validate and verify transactions, ensuring the security and accuracy of the cryptocurrency.
Bitcoin operates on the principles of cryptography, which is the use of mathematical algorithms to secure and verify transactions. Bitcoin is created through a process called mining, where powerful computers solve complex mathematical problems to verify transactions and earn new bitcoins as a reward.
Bitcoin has a finite supply, with a maximum of 21 million bitcoins that will ever be created. This feature gives it a unique advantage over traditional fiat currencies, as it cannot be manipulated by central banks or government institutions.
The value of Bitcoin is determined by supply and demand in the market. Bitcoin's price has been known for its volatility, with sudden price fluctuations often caused by speculative investments, news announcements, and market sentiment.
Bitcoin can be sent and received globally, with low fees and without the need for intermediaries such as banks or payment processors. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, which means that once a transaction is confirmed, it cannot be reversed or canceled.
While Bitcoin is the most well-known cryptocurrency, there are many other cryptocurrencies in existence, such as Ethereum, Litecoin, and Ripple. Nevertheless, Bitcoin's market capitalization is still by far the largest among all cryptocurrencies.
