Marathon Petroleum's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers

The downstream petroleum business operates in a highly competitive environment, particularly in the acquisition of crude oil and the marketing of refined products. Competition exists across four markets: wholesale (including exports), spot, branded, and retail distribution. Competitors include independent marketers, integrated oil companies, high-volume retailers, private-brand marketers, large commercial and industrial consumers, refiners or marketers supplying refiner-branded independent entrepreneurs, as well as producers and marketers of alternative energy and fuels. Market conditions are cyclical and affected by global economic and political events, government regulations, and price changes in crude oil, natural gas, and refined products. Seasonal demand fluctuations also influence operating results.

Marathon Petroleum's SWOT

Every point below is a fixed rule applied to a metric already shown elsewhere on this page (Market Structure, Profitability, Valuation, Run-Rate, Stock Performance, Quality Breadth) not an independent strategic assessment. A blank quadrant means no rule was met, not that none apply.

Strengths

  • Return on equity 27.7 points above the industry aggregate.
  • Latest-quarter revenue run-rate is accelerating (+35.4% annualized vs trailing 12 months).
  • Outperforming the U.S.A. 500 over the trailing 12 months.

Weaknesses

  • Low relative market share vs the industry leader (0.17x).

Opportunities

  • Industry revenue growing at a healthy 12.6% median pace.
  • Trades at a lower P/E than the industry average (9.3x vs 16.5x) despite a higher return on invested capital -- a possible re-rating opportunity.

Threats

No rule matched.

Methodology: mechanical, rule-based SWOT. Each bullet reuses a figure already sourced and cited elsewhere on this page; nothing here is generated narrative or independent analyst judgment.
