Eastern Bankshares Inc's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers

The company operates in the highly competitive financial services industry of the Boston metropolitan area, holding a 7.2% weighted average deposit market share across seven banking markets and a 4.4% deposit market share in the Boston market, where it ranks fifth. Competition for deposits arises from banking institutions within the primary market area, as well as securities brokerage firms, credit unions, insurance companies, and money market funds. Non-bank institutions also compete by utilizing technology-driven delivery systems and offering higher rates on deposit products. In commercial banking, competition includes large regional banks, commercial finance companies, leasing companies, insurance companies, other non-bank lenders, and institutional investors such as collateralized loan obligation managers. Several of the largest banks in the United States have a significant and growing presence in the market, providing a broader range of products and greater balance sheet exposure. The company competes based on customer service, execution quality, product range, price, and reputation, and anticipates increased competition due to regulatory, technological, and industry consolidation trends.
