The company operates in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, competing with other insurance carriers for business from independent agents. In Massachusetts, it ranks as the fourth largest private passenger auto insurance carrier, the largest commercial auto insurance carrier, and the third largest homeowner insurance carrier. The company distributes its products exclusively through independent agents and does not accept business from insurance brokers, except for personal automobile policies assigned by the Massachusetts Automobile Insurance Plan (MAIP) or written through the Commercial Automobile Servicing Carrier program administered by CAR. CAR establishes rates for personal and commercial automobile policies assigned through the MAIP and residual market pools. The company annually benchmarks its products against major competitors and updates its product offerings, discounts, rate levels, and underwriting guidelines accordingly.
