The company faces competition in its Captisol business from other suppliers of cyclodextrin excipients and alternative technologies designed to enhance the solubility or stability of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Some drugs developed by the company, its licensees, and partners may compete with existing therapies or drugs under development by other companies. Academic institutions, government agencies, and other public and private organizations conducting research may also seek patent protection for potentially competing products or technologies and may collaborate with competitors. The company's competitive position relies on its ability to secure patent protection and develop proprietary products or processes. The company has ongoing minimum purchase commitments under its agreement with Hovione.
