Canterbury Park Holding's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers
Running Aces Harness Park in Columbus Township, Anoka County, Minnesota, a racetrack and card room located roughly 50 miles from Canterbury Park, is a direct competitor. On a seasonal basis, Running Aces offers pari-mutuel gambling on live standardbred horse races, as well as year-round wagering on simulcasting of all horse events. Running Aces runs a card room that competes directly with the Companys Card Casino, in addition to pari-mutuel wagering.
With a significant number of players, the Company operates in a highly competitive wagering and gaming environment. Tribal casinos, state-sponsored lotteries, and other types of regulated gambling in the United States and other jurisdictions compete with the Companys competitive wagering operations and activities. The Company competes with a number of Minnesota tribal casinos that offer video slot machines, table games, and both banked and unbanked card games, including Minnesotas largest casino, Mystic Lake, which is owned by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and is located approximately four miles from the Racetrack (the "SMSC").
Indirect rivalry for discretionary consumer expenditure comes from a range of sources, including spectator sports and other leisure and gaming possibilities. A wide selection of live and televised professional and collegiate athletic events are held in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan region. A wide range of summer attractions, including amusement parks, athletic events, and other local activities, compete with live horse racing.
Finally, in order to get horses to run at the Racetrack, the Company competes with racetracks around the United States. We rely heavily on our ability to offer competitive purses to attract owners and trainers who can send high-quality horses to our Racetrack. Horses from racetracks around Des Moines, Iowa, and Chicago, Illinois compete fiercely for the companys horses. This battle is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.
Developers of various residential, mixed-use, office, retail, hotel, and entertainment locations in Shakopee and elsewhere in Minnesota compete with Canterbury Development and its partner ventures. These additional developers may be larger and more resourced than Canterbury Development, or Canterbury Development and its developer partners when taken together. Real estate leasing is a highly competitive market. Rent, location, lease duration, lease incentives, services supplied, and the kind and condition of the property to be leased are the most important competitive variables. All owners, developers, and operators of similar space in the locations where our properties are located will compete directly with the Canterbury Development joint ventures.
