Description of Sunhydrogen
SunHydrogen, Inc. develops solar hydrogen technology that produces hydrogen from sunlight and water without external power input. Their system integrates substrates, photovoltaic layers, stabilization coatings, and catalysts to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. This method differs from conventional hydrogen production via steam reforming of natural gas. The company aims to generate hydrogen on-site, reducing transportation-related emissions and capital costs, targeting a production cost of $2.50 per kilogram to compete with natural gas-derived hydrogen. Technology development is led by Dr. Syed Mubeen and Dr. Joun Lee at SunHydrogen's Iowa laboratory, supported by research agreements with the University of Iowa and the University of Michigan, and collaborations with industrial partners. Their work focuses on nanoparticle-based tandem semiconductor units and re-engineered commercially available thin-film solar cells for hydrogen production. Recent milestones include validating manufacturability at scale, optimizing electroplating processes, achieving high photovoltages, demonstrating stability under accelerated conditions, scaling catalyst deposition, and collaborating with COTEC for high-throughput production.
