SUNNYVALE, Calif. Jan. 03, 2024 - GSI Technology, a leading provider of high-performance memory solutions for various industries, including networking, telecommunications, and military, announced today that it has been awarded a $1.1 million contract from AFWERX for an SBIR Direct-to-Phase II to demonstrate the capabilities of its next-generation Associative Processing Unit-2 (APU2). This award serves as recognition of GSI Technology’s ground-breaking Gemini Associative Processing Unit (APU) in the field of AI and high-performance parallel computing (HPPC).
GSI Technology’s APU2 is designed to leverage its unique compute in-memory architecture, paving the way for high-data computation use cases within various industries. The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory’s recognition of this potential has led to the award, as GSI Technology’s APU2 demonstrates unprecedented capabilities in data processing, making it an ideal choice for advanced computing applications.
While GSI Technology’s current financial quarters have reported some adverse market conditions, with a decrease in revenue of -42.8% year on year, the recent award adds a promising glimmer amidst challenging market circumstances. Additionally, GSI Technology’s corporate customers recorded a modest advance in their cost of revenue by 0.6% in the third quarter of 2023 year on year, and sequentially, costs of revenue grew by 16.54%.The decline in GSI Technology Inc’s business was prominent among its corporate clients in specific industries. The Appliance & Tool industry experienced a revenue contraction of -33.1%, while the Electronic Parts & Equipment industry and Communications Equipment industry faced contractions of -10.4% and -33.2%, respectively. However, the Computer Networks industry performed well, countering the overall trend.
It is noteworthy that the revenue decline reported by Avnet Inc (AVT), one of GSI Technology’s customers, reiterates the challenging market environment. However, by focusing on clients within the Miscellaneous Manufacturing Industry (with a -19.89% revenue decline) and the Professional Services Industry (with a 3.21% revenue increase), there is hope for future achievements and better results.
Despite these hurdles, GSI Technology succeeded in decreasing its capital expenditure by -38.59%, indicating prudent financial management. Such figures are usually indicative of how CEOs perceive business signals. Furthermore, the decline in capital expenditure-sensitive industries such as the Miscellaneous Manufacturing Industry (-19.89% revenue) contrasts with the positive growth observed in the Professional Services Industry (3.21% revenue).
In summary, GSI Technology’s receipt of the award from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory serves as a testament to its cutting-edge capabilities in AI and high-performance computing. While the company faces challenges within certain industries and a decline in overall revenue, the recognition and investment in the APU2 technology highlight the potential for future advancements and success.
