Mufg Americas Holdings's Comment on Competition and Industry Peers
Banking is a highly competitive business. We compete actively for loan, deposit, and other financial services business both nationally and internationally. Our competitors include a large number of state and national banks, thrift institutions, credit unions, finance companies, mortgage banks and major foreign-affiliated or foreign banks, as well as many financial and nonfinancial firms that offer services similar to those offered by us, including many large securities firms, financial services subsidiaries of commercial and manufacturing companies and marketplace lenders. Many of these competitors enjoy fewer regulatory restraints and some may have lower cost structures. Some of our competitors are community or regional banks that have strong local market positions, while others include large financial institutions that have substantial capital, technology and marketing resources.
The financial services industry is also becoming more competitive as further
technological advances enable more companies to provide financial services.
These technological advances increasingly allow parties to complete financial
transactions electronically and may diminish the importance of depository institutions
and other financial intermediaries.
Current federal law has made it easier for out-of-state banks to enter and compete
in the states in which we operate. Competition in our principal markets may
further intensify as a result of the Dodd-Frank Act which, among other things,
permits out-of-state de novo branching by national banks, state banks, and foreign
banks from other states.
The primary factors in competing for business include pricing, convenience of
office locations and other delivery methods, range of products offered, customer
relationships, and level of services offered.
