Yield10 Bioscience Receives Approval for Genome-Edited E3902 Camelina in Canada
WOBURN, Mass. - In a significant development for agricultural bioscience, Yield10 Bioscience, Inc. (Nasdaq:YTEN) announced that the Plant Biosafety Office (PBO) of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has cleared the company’s genome-edited E3902 Camelina sativa (Camelina) for planting in Canada. The PBO reviewed information on Yield10’s E3902 Camelina and determined that it is not a Plant with Novel Trait (PNT) and does not require a pre-market notification under Part V of the Seeds Regulations.
E3902 Camelina is a game-changer for the agriculture industry, as it combines genome edits in three proprietary genetic traits - C3008a, C3008b, and C3009. These edits lead to a remarkable five percent increase in oil production and a lighter seed coat color compared to the parental Camelina line. This significant improvement is critical for sustainable biofuel and omega-3 oil markets.
While not subject to a pre-market notification requirement, E3902 Camelina still adheres to other applicable requirements of the Seeds Act and Regulations in Canada. This ensures that the crop meets the necessary safety and quality standards.
Furthermore, Yield10 Bioscience had previously reported that their proprietary varieties of winter Camelina have demonstrated tolerance to commonly used herbicides in first field tests. Herbicide tolerance is a crucial factor for the successful cultivation of Camelina on large acreage, especially for its intended use in the biofuel and omega-3 oil markets.
The approval of E3902 Camelina in Canada marks a significant milestone for Yield10 Bioscience and highlights their commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture. With its improved oil production and lighter seed coat color, E3902 Camelina has the potential to revolutionize the biofuel and omega-3 oil industries. Moreover, its herbicide tolerance makes it a viable option for large-scale cultivation, further solidifying its position as a game-changer in the agricultural landscape.
