Badger Meter, a prominent Milwaukee-based manufacturing company, has fortified its position in the area of smart water monitoring with a strategic acquisition. Badger Meter Inc. (NYSE: BMI), which manufactures flow measurement and control products, announced recently that it has snapped up a trusted name in remote water monitoring - collectively the hardware, software, and the distinguished Telog brand from tech heavyweight, Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB). This acquisition encompasses the Trimble Unity Remote Monitoring software and RTUs (remote telemetry units), adding robust real-time monitoring capabilities to Badger Meter’s offerings.
This move is emblematic of an evolving trend amongst those invested in water, wastewater, stormwater, and environmental water monitoring. More and more, market players are finding the need to improve data collection from distributed sources, allowing for more efficient water resource management and diagnosis of infrastructure problems. Badger Meter’s acquisition could therefore give it an edge to cater to this growing demand.
Badger Meter’s latest acquisition, however, coincides with an unimpressive financial show by Trimble Inc. In the third quarter of 2023, despite a significant revenue increase of 7.37% year on year, this growth fell short of the 11.57% average revenue increase reported by its competitors. While Trimble Inc managed to maintain higher profitability with a net margin of 8.99%, the company reported a disappointing net income fall of -12.7% year on year, performing below par compared to its competitors’ income growth of 18.07%.Whether Trimble’s sale of its remote water monitoring assets will offset this downturn remains to be seen. Meanwhile, should Badger Meter leverage its new acquisition well, it might fill a significant niche market capitalizing on the urgent need for smart water solutions.
While it is too soon to forecast the immediate impact of Badger Meter’s acquisition on its market performance, the agreement reflects a decisive strategic move. This integration of both hardware and software offerings reaffirms Badger Meter’s commitment to the smart water arena and could provide significant avenues for future growth. As climate changes and infrastructure ages, the tools for maintaining and optimising water-related operations become all the more essential. The company that can provide a comprehensive suite of reliable and innovative solutions is poised for success.
