Brazil: TotalEnergies and Petrobras Take Final Investment Decision for Atapu-2 and Spia-2 Oil Developments

Paris-based energy company TotalEnergies, in partnership with Petrobras and other consortium partners, has announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the second development phase of Atapu and Spia oil fields in the pre-salt Santos Basin, offshore Brazil. The FID marks an important milestone in the further development of these untapped oil reserves.

The Atapu field has been in production since 2020 through the P-70 Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit, with a production capacity of 150,000 barrels of oil per day. The second development phase of Atapu and Spia fields is expected to increase the oil production capacity even further.

These oil fields, located in the Santos Basin, are part of the pre-salt region, one of the largest oil discoveries in recent years. The pre-salt reserves are estimated to hold significant amounts of oil, making Brazil a key player in the global oil market.

TotalEnergies, as the operator, will work closely with Petrobras and other consortium partners to develop the fields and maximize their production potential. The company’s expertise in offshore oil production and its commitment to sustainable practices make it a reliable partner for the development of these oil assets.

In addition to the development of Atapu and Spia fields, TotalEnergies has also been making significant strides in expanding its presence in other regions. One such example is the company’s recent project in Oman, where it has launched the Marsa LNG project and deployed its multi-energy strategy.

During a visit to Mascate, Oman, TotalEnergies’ CEO Patrick Pouyanné met with His Majesty Hatham bin Tarik al Said, Sultan of Oman, and Minister of Energy and Minerals, Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, to reaffirm the long-term partnership between TotalEnergies and the Sultanate of Oman. This visit highlighted the company’s commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio and exploring new opportunities in the region.

Furthermore, TotalEnergies has successfully restarted gas production at the Tyra offshore hub in Denmark, following a major redevelopment project. The Tyra hub is expected to produce 5.7 million cubic meters of gas and 22,000 barrels of condensate per day, making Denmark self-sufficient once again and a net exporter of natural gas.

The restart of production at the Tyra hub demonstrates TotalEnergies’ ability to execute complex projects and maximize the potential of offshore assets. It also strengthens TotalEnergies’ position as a leading energy player in Europe and underscores its commitment to supporting the energy transition by providing cleaner energy sources.

Overall, TotalEnergies’ Final Investment Decision for the Atapu-2 and Spia-2 oil developments in Brazil, combined with its projects in Oman and Denmark, showcase the company’s global reach and ambition to develop and operate diverse energy assets. These developments not only contribute to the company’s growth but also underline its commitment to sustainability and supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources.
