Teledyne FLIR to Provide Canada with Over 800 Drones for Ukraine, Valued at CAD$95 Million
The global defense and imaging technology company, Teledyne FLIR, has recently secured a substantial contract with Canada’s Department of National Defence. The deal involves the supply of more than 800 SkyRanger R70 Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), with a total worth exceeding CAD$95 million (approximately US$70 million). These cutting-edge drones will be donated by Canada to the government of Ukraine, providing crucial support in various operations.
Built by Teledyne FLIR in Waterloo, Ontario, the SkyRanger R70 drones are equipped with advanced features, including autonomous navigation capability and state-of-the-art thermal and daytime imaging capabilities. These qualities make them suitable for a broad range of applications, from surveillance and border control to science, broadcast, and even astronomy.
The significance of this contract lies not only in the advanced technology it provides but also in the geostrategic implications. With Ukraine facing numerous security challenges, the Canadian government’s gesture of support through this donation will undoubtedly strengthen the country’s defense capabilities.
Teledyne FLIR’s success follows its commitment to continuous innovation in the field of imaging solutions. Teledyne e2v, a subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies, recently unveiled its latest achievement, the OnyxMax low light CMOS image sensor. Specifically designed for extremely low light conditions, this sensor boasts the capability to detect objects in as little as 1 mLux of light. The enhanced sensitivity and image resolution provided by OnyxMax make it highly versatile, applicable to sectors such as defense, traffic monitoring, surveillance, and even astronomy.
Additionally, Teledyne DALSA, another division of Teledyne Technologies, has been making significant strides in its Contact Image Sensors (CIS) production. Their AxCIS family of high-speed and high-resolution line scan imaging modules are now in full-scale production. These CIS modules combine sensors, lenses, and lights into one integrated package, making them cost-effective solutions for a wide range of machine vision applications that require precise inspection capabilities.
Teledyne FLIR’s continuous dedication to technological advancement in both the field of drones and imaging solutions demonstrates their commitment to enhancing global defense systems and industry applications. Through partnerships with governments and continuous product innovation, Teledyne FLIR remains at the forefront of providing cutting-edge solutions to meet the evolving needs of the world.
