Planet Labs PBC, a renowned provider of daily Earth data and insights, has recently announced that their first hyperspectral satellite, Tanager-1, is all set for launch. This significant progress has been made possible through their collaboration with the Carbon Mapper Coalition and its philanthropic partners. The spacecraft, Tanager-1, arrived at Vandenberg Space Force Base on June 3rd, preparing for liftoff as early as July as part of the Transporter-11 Rideshare mission in partnership with SpaceX.
The launch of Tanager-1 marks the beginning of a new era in hyperspectral satellite technology. The spacecraft boasts cutting-edge capabilities that enable the collection of rich and detailed data about our planet. Hyperspectral imagery allows for the analysis of Earth’s surface at an unprecedented level, revealing insights that were previously unattainable.
This groundbreaking development aligns with Planet Labs’ commitment to providing comprehensive and up-to-date information about Earth. The company has solidified its partnerships with industry leaders to enhance its offerings. One such alliance is the expanded commercial partnership with BASF Digital Farming GmbH. Planet’s satellite data products will power BASF Digital Farming’s advanced digital farming solutions under its brand, xarvio Digital Farming Solutions. This collaboration empowers BASF Digital Farming to leverage satellite insights in optimizing their smart farming products and services.
Furthermore, Planet Labs has extended its partnership with ZEP-RE, an African reinsurance company headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. The successful utilization of Planet’s insurance solutions in enhancing drought risk protection in the Horn of Africa during their first year of collaboration has paved the way for a five-year project extension until October 2027. This continued partnership will further strengthen drought risk mitigation efforts in the region.
The launch of Tanager-1, in partnership with the Carbon Mapper Coalition, signals a significant breakthrough in hyperspectral satellite technology. As Planet Labs explores new horizons with its growing network of partners, the utilization of satellite data in various sectors, such as agriculture and insurance, continues to foster advancements in understanding and protecting our planet.
