San Francisco Planet Labs PBC, a prominent provider of Earth observation data, has announced a significant multi-year partnership with Laconic, a company specializing in climate finance solutions. This collaboration aims to leverage advanced satellite technology for carbon monitoring, facilitating informed carbon credit trading and the monetization of natural carbon assets.

The deal, valued in the seven figures over a multi-year period, will enable Laconic to implement Planet’s Forest Carbon Monitoring products, which include precise data collected from satellites at 3-meter and 30-meter resolutions. This agreement aligns with a growing global emphasis on sustainability and the need for accurate data to tackle climate change.

Laconic s Sovereign Carbon securitization platform represents a significant step towards transforming the carbon credit marketplace, allowing governments and organizations to better manage and monetize their carbon assets. This initiative is part of a broader movement to enhance the transparency and efficiency of carbon trading, ultimately contributing to global carbon reduction efforts.

In addition to its collaboration with Laconic, Planet Labs is strengthening its presence in the agriculture sector. The company recently signed a contract with American Crystal Sugar Company, facilitated through its partner SatAgro. This engagement focuses on leveraging Planet’s satellite data for advanced monitoring of sugar beet crops in the northern United States. As the largest beet sugar producer in the U.S. American Crystal Sugar aims to enhance its crop management efforts, utilizing precise satellite insights to improve yield and efficiency.

Furthermore, Planet Labs has renewed a contract with Brazil’s Federal Police for a year-long monitoring initiative aimed at protecting the country’s threatened rainforests. The renewed contract, also valued in the seven figures, is executed through Planet s collaboration with SCCON Geospatial. With access to Planet s daily satellite imagery, Brazilian authorities have significantly intensified their efforts to combat deforestation, reportedly recovering nearly $3 billion through fines, seized goods, and other enforcement actions.

Together, these initiatives underscore Planet Labs commitment to using satellite data for sustainability and environmental protection. By providing critical information that aids in carbon credit trading, agricultural advancements, and law enforcement efforts, Planet Labs is positioning itself at the forefront of climate action and resource management in an increasingly challenging global landscape.
