WASHINGTON Building upon the successful implementation of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) in their water department, Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) is forging ahead with the deployment of similar infrastructure for their power department. In a strategic partnership with global water technology leader Xylem Inc. (NYSE: XYL), TPU is integrating cutting-edge AMI technology to optimize operational efficiency, elevate customer service, and support regional economic and environmental goals.’
The partnership leverages Xylem’s innovative solutions, including Sensus Stratus IQ residential electric meters and the FlexNet communication network, to modernize Tacoma’s water and electric networks. This transformative deployment aims to provide a host of benefits from improved meter reading accuracy and faster outage detection to enhanced customer insights about energy usage. By enabling more responsive and adaptive management of utilities, TPU is set to lead a wave of smart infrastructure developments in the region.
Xylem’s advanced metering infrastructure is a key component in addressing pressing environmental challenges. This initiative aligns with TPU’s broader commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency, combining operational excellence with a proactive response to climate goals.
In addition to these technological advancements, Xylem is reinforcing its dedication to long-term water stewardship with new 2030 sustainability commitments, following its merger with Evoqua. The company’s ambitious targets aim to reduce global water demand by at least 2 billion cubic meters, diminish its own water intensity by 30%, and enhance transparency regarding the water usage of its supply chain. The strategy reflects Xylem’s holistic approach to addressing the global water crisis and promoting sustainable practices.
Xylem’s commitment to sustainability and innovation was further elucidated at their 2024 Investor Day, where the company unveiled its multi-year growth strategy and long-term financial framework. CEO Matthew Pine, alongside other senior executives, provided insights into Xylem’s plans to achieve market-leading growth and foster a more secure water future.
“Our mission is to empower customers and communities to tackle water challenges head-on and to ensure sustainable water management for future generations,” stated Pine. “The successful integration of our technologies in Tacoma stands as a testament to the impact of our innovations.”
As TPU and Xylem continue to roll out these advanced technologies, the focus remains steadfast on creating smarter, more efficient utility networks and fostering a collaborative approach to sustainability. The deployment not only marks a significant milestone for Tacoma but also serves as a model for utility infrastructure modernization nationwide.
