RAHWAY, N.J. - Merck, a leading global pharmaceutical company, and Orion Corporation, a Finnish pharmaceutical company, have announced the mutual exercise of an option to convert their ongoing co-development and co-commercialization agreement into an exclusive global license for Merck. This includes the rights to opevesostat (MK-5684/ODM-208), an investigative CYP11A1 inhibitor, along with other candidates targeting CYP11A1. This significant collaboration signifies a major stride in the field of oncology, particularly for the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.
The decision to exercise the option was driven by the notable progress made in the development of opevesostat. As an investigational CYP11A1 inhibitor, opevesostat has displayed promising potential in combating metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, a highly aggressive form of the disease that affects numerous individuals globally. By inhibiting the CYP11A1 enzyme, which plays a crucial role in testosterone production, opevesostat offers a targeted and innovative approach to managing this challenging disease.
Merck’s exclusive global license will enable them to maneuver independently, leveraging the research, development, and commercialization prowess of their organization to bring opevesostat to patients worldwide. This is in alignment with Merck’s dedication to providing cutting-edge solutions in the field of oncology, offering hope and improved outcomes for patients facing metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.
In addition to this exciting development, Merck Animal Health, a division of Merck & Co. Inc. has recently received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for their groundbreaking NOBIVAC NXT Canine Flu H3N2 vaccine.
