Hewlett Packard Enterprise Delivers Aurora, the World’s Second Exascale Supercomputer to Argonne National Laboratory
Leading technology company Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has announced the successful delivery of Aurora, the world’s second exascale supercomputer, to the United States Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory. The achievement was announced at the ISC High Performance 2024 event in Hamburg, Germany.
Aurora has reached an impressive 1.012 exaflops on 87% of the system, making it the second-fastest supercomputer in the world, as confirmed by the TOP500 list of the most powerful supercomputers. This significant milestone showcases HPE’s expertise and leadership in the field of supercomputing. The collaboration with Intel has played a crucial role in bringing this cutting-edge technology to fruition.
In addition to this accomplishment, HPE’s corporate customers have recorded a notable increase in their cost of revenue, with a growth of 5.29% in the fourth quarter of 2023 year-on-year. Sequentially, costs of revenue grew by 134%. However, during the same period, HPE’s overall revenue experienced a decline of -13.5% year-on-year and -8.11% sequentially. On the other hand, revenue from HPE’s corporate clients showed a positive trend, with an 8.48% year-on-year increase and a remarkable sequential growth of 36.21%.These contrasting figures have led to greater expenditure by corporate customers, reflected in a 5.29% surge in cost of sales compared to the previous year, coupled with a decrease in capital expenditure. To gain insight into consumer spending, the performance of U.S. consumer-oriented sectors such as the Internet, Mail Order & Online Shops Industry and Department & Discount Retail Industry should be considered, as they have experienced revenue growth of 11.33% and 1.03% respectively.
HPE’s business partners, particularly corporate customers in the Property & Casualty Insurance industry and the Investment Services sector, have contributed significantly to the increase in top-line growth. Companies like Travelers Companies Inc (TRV) and Cboe Global Markets Inc (CBOE) have been among the fastest-growing clients. Various other corporate customers from industries such as Miscellaneous Fabricated Products, Construction Services, Consumer Financial Services, and Property & Casualty Insurance have also witnessed substantial revenue growth.
However, not all entities have displayed strength, and some sectors, such as Kyndryl Holdings Inc (KD), have raised concerns due to their performance. The impact of the decline in capital expenditure by -25.94% at HPE’s corporate customers further emphasizes the need to closely monitor industries associated with it, such as the Construction & Mining Machinery Industry, which experienced a revenue decline of -1.44% in the same timeframe.
Ultimately, these factors have influenced the market capitalization of HPE, as shareholders share the same concerns. The CSIMarkets’ stock index of businesses supplied by HPE has seen a year-to-date increase of 2.08%, while HPE shares have seen a more modest growth of 0.77%.Overall, the delivery of Aurora showcases HPE’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of computing technology. However, the contrasting financial figures among its corporate customers highlight the need for continued monitoring and analysis of industry performance to gauge the state of spending and investment.
