HII Advances Naval and Space Technology with Strategic Redeliveries, New Facilities, and Major Contracts
In a remarkable stride towards bolstering U.S. naval capabilities and advancing the frontiers of space exploration, HII (NYSE: HII), a global leader in shipbuilding and defense technologies, has achieved significant milestones across its diverse operational divisions. These developments highlight HII’s continued commitment to innovation and strategic partnerships with the U.S. Navy and the aerospace industry.
On November 13, 2024, HII s Newport News Shipbuilding division successfully completed the post-shakedown availability (PSA) work on the USS Montana (SSN 794), a Virginia-class fast attack submarine. The PSA is a critical phase in a vessel s lifecycle, ensuring that it is finely tuned and fully operational following its initial deployment. The redelivery of the USS Montana to the U.S. Navy signifies HII s precision and expertise in submarine maintenance, which is pivotal for enhancing the submarine’s readiness and effectiveness in missions vital to national security.
Further showcasing its expansion in technological innovation, HII s Mission Technologies division inaugurated its Advanced Materials and Coatings Lab (AMCL) in Willowbrook, Illinois, on October 2, 2024. This cutting-edge facility is designated for the development and manufacturing of thermal space coatings, essential for the aerospace industry, government and commercial space programs, and commercial satellite providers. The lab represents a significant leap forward in materials science, with the potential to underscore future advancements in space exploration technologies by providing more resilient and efficient materials.
In addition to these developments, HII s Ingalls Shipbuilding division was awarded a monumental $9.6 billion multi-ship procurement contract on September 24, 2024. This contract encompasses the construction of three San Antonio-class (LPD 17) amphibious ships and a contract modification for the next America-class (LHA 6) large-deck amphibious ship. As the first combined procurement of its kind for amphibious ships, the contracts set the stage for the construction of LPDs 33, 34, 35, and LHA 10, highlighting HII s crucial role in reinforcing the U.S. Navy’s amphibious capabilities.
HII s diverse projects and contracts underscore its strategic role in the intersection of naval strength and aerospace innovation. By enhancing naval readiness through submarine and amphibious ship advancements and opening new avenues for space exploration with their innovative coatings lab, HII is poised to remain at the forefront of defense and aerospace technology, making significant contributions to U.S. national security and technological supremacy.
