California-based construction firm, Granite (NYSE:GVA), has been granted a subcontract, worth about $31 million by prime contractor Skanska USA. This is part of a highway improvement project to provide enhancements along a four-and-a-half-mile corridor on Interstate 405 (I-405) in Bothell, Washington. The project is overseen by Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Sound Transits. This plan will feature expansions on the express toll lane (ETL) and will be a part of Granite’s first-quarter CAP.
Though a win for Granite, context reveals it is operating amidst some financial difficulties. Recent reports indicate that the company’s corporate clients experienced a decline in costs of revenue by 25.4% compared to a year ago. Sequentially, costs grew by 8.09% in Q4. Simultaneously, Granite’s revenue deteriorated by 4.35%, year on year, with a sequential decrease of 16.43%.An increased consumption echoed at -25.4%, suggesting a significant rise in cost and higher investment and spending across business customers compared to the same quarter last year.
However, highlights in the report do indicate revenue growths in some sectors. Granite’s corporate clients witnessed a revenue increase of 4.63%, year on year, with a sequential growth of 9.04%. The lift in the top-line offered was particularly driven by clients in the Miscellaneous Financial Services and Communications Services industries.
Despite these challenges, companies such as Nu Holdings and AT&T showcased outstanding resilience. However, there were indications of declining business clients in the Furniture and Fixtures sectors.
Granite’s overall performance appears to be impacted by an investment and spending rise of 27.65% among its business partners. That said, the Construction and Mining Machinery Industry reported a downturn of -1.19% in revenue over the similar period. This downfall, alongside Granite’s recent financial struggles, may translate into investor worries, as echoed in the company’s market capitalization and the CSIMarkets stock index.
