Construction and engineering firm, Granite (NYSE: GVA), has landed a subcontract deal worth an estimated $31 million. The agreement is with prime contractor Skanska USA, and pertains to a highway project managed by the Washington State Department of Transportation and Sound Transits. This initiative aims to provide road improvements over a four-and-a-half-mile corridor on Interstate 405 (I-405) in Bothell, Washington. Included in Granite’s first-quarter capital projects, the project’s main features include enhanced express toll lanes.

Despite the newly secured contract, the California-based company has experienced a downward trend in revenue. In the fourth quarter, Granite Construction saw a year-on-year dip of 4.35% in revenue, while sequentially it fell by 16.43%. However, it’s important to note that in contrast, Granite Construction’s corporate clients saw a growth of 4.63% year-on-year in revenues, with a 9.04% increase noted sequentially.

Contributing to this increase in revenue were the Miscellaneous Financial Services industry and Communications Services. High performing corporate clients such as Nu Holdings Ltd (NU) and AT&T Inc (T) drove the rise, as well as clients from industries of Broadcasting Media & Cable TV, Communications Services, and Natural Gas Utilities.

Nevertheless, Granite has experienced a 25.4% spike in costs for corporate clients compared to the same quarter in the previous year, leading to increased consumption and higher investment. This corresponds with an increase in spending by 27.65% among Granite’s business partners.

Despite the mixed financial performance, certain corporate clients such as Nu Holdings Ltd (NU) and AT&T Inc (T) have demonstrated exceptional resilience. However, not all companies have fared well, with some like Mohawk Industries Inc (MHK) grappling with larger issues.

In terms of economic indicators and capital spending, the Construction & Mining Machinery Industry indicated a -1.19 % decline in revenue during the same period. Investors are understandably worried, with the CSIMarket’s stock index of Granite’s customers falling by -39.73% year-to-date.
