ExxonMobil and Air Liquide Collaborate on Low-Carbon Hydrogen and Lithium Production for Sustainable Energy Transition in Texas
ExxonMobil, one of the world’s largest publicly traded international oil and gas companies, has recently made significant announcements regarding its commitment to a low-carbon future and sustainable energy transition. In a strategic move, ExxonMobil has partnered with Air Liquide, a leading provider of industrial gases and technologies, to support the production of low-carbon hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia at its Baytown facility in Texas.
The collaboration between ExxonMobil and Air Liquide aims to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon fuels, especially in the transportation sector. The agreement will enable the transportation of low-carbon hydrogen through Air Liquide’s extensive existing pipeline network, facilitating the distribution and use of this clean energy source. Additionally, Air Liquide will construct and operate four Large Modular Air separation units (LMAs) to supply 9,000 metric tons of oxygen and up to 6,500 metric tons of nitrogen, further enhancing the sustainable production processes.
Hydrogen has emerged as a promising alternative fuel due to its zero greenhouse gas emissions when used in fuel cell vehicles. By leveraging ExxonMobil’s expertise in energy production and Air Liquide’s capabilities in gas manufacturing and distribution, this partnership aims to make significant strides in decarbonizing transportation and boosting the hydrogen economy.
Furthermore, ExxonMobil has also unveiled its plans to become a leading producer of lithium, a crucial component of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. With the increasing popularity of EVs, reliable and sustainable lithium sources are in high demand. ExxonMobil has already commenced the first phase of lithium production in southwest Arkansas, where significant lithium deposits have been identified.
The company’s entry into the lithium market is a strategic move aimed at capitalizing on the growing demand for EVs and establishing itself as a key supplier in this sector by 2030. Branded as Mobil Lithium, the product offerings will draw upon ExxonMobil’s deep technical partnership with the automotive industry, leveraging its expertise in developing specialized solutions that meet the evolving needs of the electric mobility sector.
