Emergent BioSolutions Inc, a Maryland-based life sciences company, announced it has been awarded an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) procurement contract, which has a maximum value of $235.8 million. The contract requires the company to supply its BioThrax Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed to all branches of the U.S. military.
BioThrax is the only anthrax vaccine licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for both pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis against anthrax disease in conjunction with recommended antibiotic treatment. It has a well-established safety profile and is administered to more than 10 million military personnel worldwide.
The contract, which was led by the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense, will run for a base period of five years, coming to a close at the end of September 2028. Additionally, it comes with an option to extend for a further five years until September 2033.
