Corporación América Airports Reports Positive Passenger Traffic Growth Despite Challenges
In recent developments, Corporación América Airports (CAAP), a leading private airport operator, has announced an update regarding an ongoing arbitration procedure. CAAP, which holds 50% of the shares in Sociedad Aeroportuaria Kuntur Wasi (Kuntur Wasi), had submitted a request to the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in June 2018. The arbitration procedure was initiated due to a unilateral decision made by the government.
Despite the challenges faced by CAAP, the company continues to report positive growth in passenger traffic. In January 2024, CAAP registered a 2.0% year-on-year increase in passenger traffic, reaching 91.7% of the levels recorded in January 2019. This growth demonstrates CAAP’s ability to adapt and thrive amidst changing market conditions.
Analyzing the statistics in more detail, the company witnessed a marginal decline of 0.8% in domestic passengers, while international passengers remained steady. These figures reflect the dynamic nature of the aviation industry, where shifts in travel patterns and economic factors can impact passenger numbers.
December 2023 proved to be another successful month for CAAP, with a notable 10.3% year-on-year increase in passenger traffic. This represented 96.2% of the passenger levels achieved in December 2019, indicating a strong recovery from the impact of the global pandemic on air travel. Similarly, the freight volume and aircraft movements also saw positive growth during the period, highlighting the resilience of CAAP’s operations.
Throughout 2023, CAAP recorded consistent growth in domestic passengers, with a significant 10.7% increase compared to the previous year. This surge in domestic traffic can be attributed to several factors, including increased accessibility, travel demand for leisure and business purposes, and the strengthening of the local economy.
Although the aviation industry faced numerous challenges in the past years, such as travel restrictions and reduced passenger confidence, CAAP’s ability to maintain passenger traffic levels at around 90% of pre-pandemic figures is commendable. This demonstrates the company’s sound management strategies and strong market position.
Looking ahead, CAAP remains committed to delivering exceptional airport services and driving sustainable growth. The company’s dedication to innovation, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency will continue to position it as a leader in the global airport industry.
