Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. (NYSE: CLF), North America’s largest flat-rolled steel producer, has announced a series of strategy updates including publishing a monthly Cliffs Hot Rolled Market Price, potential acquisition of U.S. Steel, and a price increase for all carbon hot rolled, cold rolled and coated steel products.

In response to industry trends and customers’ feedback, Cleveland-Cliffs will publish the monthly Cliffs Hot Rolled Market Price through a letter to all flat-rolled customers. The price will coincide with the monthly opening of the Hot Rolled order book and will also be available on the company’s official website. The company stated its plans to update this price more frequently if necessary, which will allow customers more accuracy and predictability in their financial planning and procurement.

Leveraging the on-going global steel industry consolidation, Cleveland-Cliffs also commented on the potential acquisition of U.S. Steel by Nippon Steel. Lourenco Goncalves, Chairman, President, and CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs, recognized U.S. Steel as a significantly undervalued entity with tremendous synergy potential when integrated with Cleveland-Cliffs. Such a merger would result in a union-friendly American champion, ranking among the top-10 steelmakers globally.

In another strategic stride, Cleveland-Cliffs announced an immediate increase in its current spot market base prices for all carbon hot rolled, cold rolled, and coated steel products, effective immediately with all new orders. The minimum base price for hot-rolled steel has now escalated to $1,000 per net ton

Cleveland-Cliffs, which was originally founded as a mine operator in 1847, has evolved over time into the largest flat-rolled steel producer in North America. The company’s recent moves clearly depict a strategic ambition to not only solidify its market position but also adapt to changing marketplace dynamics, ensuring a healthy and sustainable customer relationship while creating potential opportunities for sector consolidation.
