Candel Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical firm with a strong emphasis on the development of multimodal biological immunotherapies for cancer patients, recently unveiled preclinical data at the AACR Annual Meeting in San Diego. The information revolved around an innovative first-in-class multimodal immunotherapy candidate aimed at inducing tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS) in solid tumors, courtesy of Candels enLIGHTEN Discovery Platform.

The enLIGHTEN Discovery Platform facilitates the development of a unique therapeutic strategy for tackling solid tumors, making this advancement a notable feat. Additionally, the potential of the multimodal immunotherapy approach in stimulating a robust anti-tumor response is significant, given the ability of TLS to aid in tumor regression and improve survival rates.

Prior to this, Candel Therapeutics had also updated its ongoing phase 1b clinical trial of the herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) replication-competent viral immunotherapy candidate, CAN-3110. The trial covers patients experiencing a reemergence of Recurrent High-Grade Glioma (rHGG) post standard care treatment. The findings were presented during the 5th Glioblastoma Drug Development Summit held in Boston, Massachusetts.

In terms of business development, Candel underwent strategic restructuring in November 2023. This move was initiated to prioritize resources toward the development of key value drivers such as CAN-3110, the enLIGHTEN Discovery Platform, and key clinical readouts for CAN-2409. As part of the restructuring process, the company reduced its workforce and expenses associated with preparing for the commercial launch of CAN-2409.

The company anticipates presenting initial activity and biomarker data for CAN-3110 injections for recurrent high-grade glioma in the latter half of 2024. Data for the second drug candidate based on the enLIGHTEN Discovery Platform is also expected to be available in Q3 2024. Candel intends to persist in its data collection initiatives for CAN-2409, with survival data expected for trials involving non-small cell lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, and prostate cancer throughout 2024.

On a concluding note, Candel Therapeutics continues to focus on developing and commercializing viral immunotherapies to help patients fight cancer, with a strong emphasis on innovation and novel therapeutic strategies.
